Background of the Study
Acculturation, the process by which individuals adopt cultural traits of a new environment, plays a pivotal role in shaping mental health outcomes among urban migrants. In Alimosho, Lagos State, rapid urbanization has resulted in a diverse influx of migrants experiencing cultural transitions and identity shifts (Ola, 2023). These changes often lead to stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges, as migrants struggle to reconcile their traditional cultural values with urban lifestyles (Adeyemi, 2024). Recent research suggests that while acculturation can facilitate social integration, it also poses risks for psychological well-being when cultural dissonance occurs (Emeka, 2025). The interplay between cultural adaptation and mental health is further complicated by socioeconomic factors, limited social support, and language barriers. This study critically examines the relationship between acculturation processes and mental health among urban migrants in Alimosho, aiming to identify both the positive and negative outcomes of cultural adaptation in a highly urbanized setting. The findings are expected to inform mental health interventions and social policies tailored for migrant populations.
Statement of the Problem
Urban migrants in Alimosho Local Government Area face significant mental health challenges as they navigate complex acculturation processes. Cultural dissonance, social isolation, and economic pressures contribute to heightened levels of stress and anxiety. Despite the availability of community resources, many migrants lack adequate support systems to facilitate healthy cultural adaptation. These challenges are exacerbated by the rapid pace of urban life, leaving migrants vulnerable to mental health issues. Understanding these dynamics is essential for developing effective interventions that address both cultural and psychological needs (Ola, 2023).

Significance of the Study
This study is vital for understanding the dual-edged nature of acculturation on mental health among urban migrants. It offers insights for policymakers and mental health practitioners to design culturally sensitive interventions. The findings will contribute to improved support systems and targeted programs, enhancing overall community well-being in urban settings (Adeyemi, 2024).
